Texas Hold Em – Rules and Strategy
Texas Hold’em
Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game and is played all around the world. Anyone can learn the rules of the game in just a few minutes, however, it’s a difficult game to master. There is no optimal strategy in Texas Hold’em but rather multiple good strategies that a player can make use of. Texas Hold’em is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Each player is dealt two cards faced down, these cards are called hole cards or pocket cards. After each player at the table has received his 2 hole cards, 5 cards are dealt faced up on the table during 3 rounds, these cards are called community cards and can be seen by all players at the table. The player who gets the best hand when combining his own pocket cards with the five community cards win. The player can combine the cards anyway he wants, using both his pocket cards, one of his pocket cards or none of his pocket cards to combine the best hand of five cards.
The Blinds
In Texas Hold’em a dealer button is used at the table to see where the cards should be dealt from. The dealer button is moved one step to the left after each round. The small blind and the big blind are posted by the two players to the left of the dealer button.
Preflop
When the blinds have been placed on the table, each player is dealt two cards faced down. These are the so called hole cards. The player to the left of the big blind starts the betting round by calling (matching the big blind put on the table), raising or folding his cards. The first betting rounds are finished when all players have either called the big blind, raised or folded. If any player raises during the first betting round, the other players must decide to call the raise, re-raise or fold.
The Flop
When the first betting round is complete the dealer deals 3 cards on the table faced up. These cards are called the flop and can be seen by all players. The player to the left of the dealer button starts the second betting round by either checking (not betting) or betting. If a player bets into the pot the other players have to decide if they want to call, raise or fold. The second betting round is over when all players have either put an equal amount in to the pot or folded.
The Turn
When the second betting round is complete the dealer puts out one more card faced up on the table. This card is called The Turn or 4th Street. This card is also showed to all players at the table. The third betting round works the same way as the second round. The third betting round is over when all players have either put an equal amount in to the pot or folded.
The River
The dealer puts out the last and 5th card called the river or 5th street. This card is showed to all players and can be used by any player to combine a hand. A fourth and last betting round occurs and works exactly the same way as the second and third betting round.
Showdown
After the fourth and last betting round, it’s time for the showdown where the players still left get to show their hands. The player can use any of the five community cards on the table to combine the best 5-card hand. In other words, the player can use all the five cards on the table or he can use for cards on the table and one of his pocket cards or he can use 3 cards from the table and both of his pocket cards to combine the best hand consisting of no more then 5 cards. The player with the best combination wins the pot when you play Texas Hold em. If both players have equally good hands, the pot is split.

Responsible gambling
Gambling is a fun activity, there’s no doubt about it. However, anyone who’s a regular gambler should take into consideration some basic money management concepts. This applies to any form of gambling so if your favorite gambling venue is online poker, online casinos, or real life casinos, the same principles apply. The last thing anyone wants, including the casinos, is to have you run out of money. It’s true! A casino would prefer that you spend $50,000 a year on gambling for 20 years and without putting your financial security at risk, then to see you lose $300,000 in one year and go broke. Why? Because in one scenario, they get $300,000 from you. In the other scenario, they’ll get $1,000,000. And don’t kid yourself, that is their goal, and that’s just fine. That’s their business, that’s why they exist, and we all know it.
At this stage, you can determine a monthly gambling budget. Now establish a gambling schedule. For example, let’s say you have $5000 a month available for gambling, decide how many days a month you can actually find the time to gamble. Can you gamble 5 days a month? 10 days a month? Basically, that means you can spend $1000 or $500 per gambling session. So now that you know how much you can spend in a month, and how much you can spend per gambling session, this will help you decide which casino games you’ll play, and at which stakes. This decision is partly mathematical in the sense that some games provide better odds than others, but also personal in the sense that some games are more enjoyable than others. If you want to gamble at a hobby, it’s important that you enjoy the games you’re playing. If you figure that black jack gives you the best winning odds but you hate the game, don’t play it! Pick the next one that gives you good odds, but that you also enjoy. Also remember that some casino games are not purely based on randomness and luck and actually involve some strategy. Whenever a game allows you to make decisions during play, like let it ride for example where you can apply poker strategy, you’re odds increase. If you make the right decisions that is!
What happens when you win money, well that’s personal but you essentially have two options: Add your winnings to next month’s gambling fund, meaning that you can either spend more time gambling the following month, or you can spend the same time but play higher stakes. The other option of course is to reap the rewards and spoil yourself or your loved ones, which is always fun!
If you are careful with how much you spend on gambling and follow the methods described above, and set your goals and limits according to your financial capacity, you will never ever get in financial hardship from gambling which means you’ll enjoy it more. You could get lucky and actually profit from gambling, just don’t make that an expectations because there are no guarantees. Never play to “recuperate” previous losses. As long as you’re having fun, that’s what really matters!
